satya61229 says: PHP is number one language for web pages. It has emerged as number one due to ease of use. It is fast in execution. Code visibility wise, it is not so good. If you look other languages in editor and php at the same time then it does not look so good compared to other languages. It is fast compared to other language. Whatever JAVA people or .NET people say, I saw many sites which are not fast or running correctly in JAVA and .NET. After version 5, PHP has good features of all the mature languages. Little bit of internationalization functionality was left and that is ready with version 6 release.

PHP is the most popular module for Apache, the world's most popular web server. What more do you want? Ok, php.net has some of the best documentation of any programming language. Millions of web sites run PHP. php.net must be doing something right no matter what it's detractors say.

PHP discourages modularity, experts can't stand for such a language. All functions (hundreds) are not classified into classes but put into a single class - the main class. I can't understand why they can invent such stupid language. The main audience of PHP : novice and amateur programmers, I guess that they need a simple language so PHP is good for them.

PHP is fast and slick, and their online manual shows this. PHP supports many web servers (IIS, Apache, etc), database systems, etc. Everything is free and open source. PHP is under heavy active development and scripts are generally compatible between versions (unlike other server-side languages such as ASP and Cold Fusion). The syntax is C-like (not object-based) which may or may not be a blessing.

Well - some much for my proficiency in PERL - I now use PHP for delivering dynamic database-driven web sites *and* CGI! If your a programmer, then you will realize that coding in one language versus two, allows you to expend your energies in expanding your knowledge in one direction thus making your skills much better.
