The Sporting Life was originally a newspaper devoted to horse racing and was as integral to the British racing scene as Ascot and Newmarket. For much of its lifespan, its main rival was the Sporting Chronicle but when that paper shut down, its future seemed more secure than ever. A new rival emerged, the Racing Post, and after a few years the Sporting Life lost that battle despite an attempt to become an all-sports newspaper. However, a few months later, it rose like a phoenix from the ashes, not as a newspaper but as a website. Thus the name and tradition of the Sporting Life lives on, covering many other sports besides horse racing. In Britain, the sports with the greatest spectator following are (in no particular order) football (soccer), horse racing, greyhound racing, cricket, boxing, tennis, formula 1 motor racing, rugby union, rugby league, athletics (track and field), golf and snooker. These all have their own separate sections, except athletics. There is also a section for the NFL. Other sections are added for special events such as the Olympics. Other sports including hockey, baseball, basketball, motorcycling, rallying and motor sport (non-formula 1) are covered in a section titled "other". While angling, badminton and squash (for example) are popular participant sports in Britain there is insufficient interest for spectators to justify dedicated coverage. If any sport becomes more popular in Britain over time as a spectator sport, I assume that the website will add extra sections. While followers of some sports may be disappointed, the coverage of those sports that have dedicated sections is impressive. As a follower of sport in general and horse racing in particular, I never feel the need to look at other websites for British sporting information. This is easily the best site of its kind.
