I would like to say how much I enjoy National Geographic, I've been a subscriber for over 45 years. I also have many old Geographics from the 30's and 40's that belonged to my husband's grandfather and still enjoy looking at the advertising for old cars and appliances. I'm sure I'll enjoy this site as much as the magazine.

My acquaintance with National Geographic goes back to 15 years ago when I first saw one of its magazines in my friend's apartment. Since then I have always respected their works. Till a few weeks ago when I received an email from one of my friends regarding the 8th edition of its Atlas. The email was about inclusion of "Arabian Gulf" in parentheses beside the "Persian Gulf" and labeling of the islands of Abu Musa and Greater and Lesser Tunb with "Occupied by Iran (claimed by the U.A.E.)". It was surprising and very disappointing. Of course as an Iranian I have heard and seen such statements from Arabian states for more than 5 years but all seemed to be just minor political issues which wouldnt need a serious consideration. Such claims have always been and heard all around the world. National Geographic is not an international regulatory or justice bureau to say the final word on these issues. Its position is to reflect the world as it is. These Atlases will be recorded and referred to as original historical resources by the future people and we have this job to keep and deliver these inheritances safe and secure. People around the world dont have the opportunity to extract all the facts about the world and all of us will rely on such resources as a consolidated data book for ethical references. So instead of following some minor and unfair political recommendations, all of us expect firms like National Geographic takes its responsblities more seriously and act honest and trustee. Of course I saw their official statement regarding this issue, but that is not enough. Action is required to beleive their honesty, hopefully.

This is one of those websites that makes you realise just how big our planet is, how diverse. A real eye-opener, always fascinating and informative. A 'must have' bookmark especially if you have kids.
