Every so often over the last year, I would visit Fotolog to check out what the global cameras and minds have been focusing on. I could click on something not recently cached in their system and it would hose up real well. But, this time I was able to click to my hearts content and peel through the pages with speed to spare. The content is still a vortex for some of the most playful young photo-artists out there, except now you can actually get at it. Fotolog should get an award for most improved website.

At one point, this was a great community. However, the site has not coped well with the rise of popularity. Now it takes forever to load (sometimes doesn't at all), is full of bad photography - including some very explicit ones - and is painfully slow to browse. Look elsewhere.

It is a great page with a simple layout. It has a nice and friendly interface so you don't have to be an expert to start photo-blogging! It is different from MYSPACE and other communities because it encourages the users to post pictures taken by them. I really support that. I have met a lot of friends and it is great as a photo-blog. It's a pity that some people use it just to show off and all that. There are some interesting fotologs, though. I recommend it to everyone.

Fotolog started as a "hobby". They offer free fotologs to anyone who follows their terms of service. Because of the nature of the internet and the fact that it is worldwide, there are some people who upload things against the "Terms of Service", but they are quick to rectify it - once brought to the attention of [...]. Anyone can badmouth an online service with little or no factual basis. The fact is: the world wide web has some things that will always need improvement - much like society. The only way to improve it is to help, criticism is the easy way out.

Nice idea, but consistently slow, broken and unreliable. There are better alternatives.

Fotolog wants everything - traffic, high number of members, high number of photos etc, but they can't cope with it. The site is very slow, even with an ultra fast broadband connection it sometimes take more than a minute to load a 100kb picture - if it loads at all, that is. There are also tons of problems they promised they'd solve but never materialized. Guestbooks don't work, friends' list doesn't update or constantly get hacked, all sorts of wierd things happen on their site. And don't expect to be able to log in everytime - it's a hit and miss. Also beware of the fact that they won't let you delete your pictures in bulk, or remove your account. They just want to keep the number of members and number of photos high. Fotolog was a nice idea. If managed well it could have become one of the most successful sites on the internet. Unfortunately over my 2 years of experience with it I have watched it deteriorate into nothing more than a hacker's paradise and a teenagers' hangout to show off blurry out-of-focus egoistic pictures. Fotolog received a reported $2.4 million of investment earlier in the year. However they made no mention of it on the site, and I did not see any improvements. Many subcribers who has been patiently waiting for things to improve finally gave up and canceled their subscriptions. It's bad management that chased away the serious subscribers. Their signature line "We're looking into the problem, thanks for your patience" has become a joke among members. After 2 years I have finally decided to take my patience elsewhere and stop subscribing.
